Greetings! It's the purpose of this thread to get you on the road to discovering what SoP is all about and whether it's the right place for you. Hopefully, this won't be too long-winded, but please take the time to familiarize yourself with the rules, guidelines and background before joining in with a character. Or, if you prefer only to poke in and say 'hi', or discuss things SW related, feel free to skip through this section, but please still read the rules as they also apply to Jabba's Lounge. Thanks for your consideration.
The Goal of SoP
Servants of Passion is a writing and RPG community set in the Star Wars galaxy. The range of possible stories and usable characters within such a genre is practically limitless. Yet we do wish to remain true to the vision of Lucas' films. EU (Expanded Universe) knowledge from books, comics, cartoons and the like may be used and indeed we do draw heavily from these works. Keep in mind however, that SoP is its own variation, its own blend of EU & 'canon'. The Yuuzhan Vong, for example never happened here and Byss was never destroyed by the 'Galaxy Gun'. In general, a writer here is free to make use of EU in their stories, but bear in mind that certain things will meet our scrutiny with the goal of keeping to the spirit of this board. As an example, melee swords with cortosis weave, able to parry lightsabers or cause them to short out? Exceedingly rare, if allowed at all. In most cases, if you have a desire to use something EU in either your character's background, or a current story line, it's not a problem. EU is a large barrel to dip from. But if there's the slightest question, please feel free to ask one of the admins and we'll give you a reply as soon as possible.
Characters from the movies and books, and canon events are of secondary importance here at SoP. They helped provide the backdrop and set events in motion which have bearing on our current stories, but we will likely not hear from them directly. As such, no published/canon characters are on the block to be Player Characters. Nor do we wish to see the sons, daughters or nephews of such figures as Luke, Han, Boba Fett, Chewie, etcetera. This is not an absolute/stringent rule, but keep in mind that such characters have very little chance of being accepted. Please join us with an original character, unique to you.
Story Telling:
Our focus here is writing. Above all we want a warm, friendly place where we can weave tales that are enjoyable to read and reread in the days, months and, hopefully years to come. -glances fretfully at Yuku- We're not about quick, speed-along posts and one-liners. One or two brief paragraphs will not be accepted in thread arcs on more than occasional basis. You don't always have to make long, drawn out posts, but you do have to put thought and effort into your writing. Take care that what you tell fits the setting and the story. Sometimes posts may be shorter or longer than the norm, depending on many variables. As a rule of thumb, posts consistently less than 200 words are not what SoP is about. I'll stress that you consider this carefully before applying with a new character or rejoining if you were part of the board before.
Things to remember and be careful about while writing here are: Direction, where is the story going and what's the point of current events/dialogue? Define the reasons for your character's placement and actions. Spelling & Grammar We all make mistakes, and we staff have no desire to poke holes in your work, but these things are important to enjoyable reading. Please make use of a word processor of some kind, like MS Word or Open Office to construct your posts before publishing them on the board. Give your work a double check and edit as necessary. Doing it this way has the added benefit of protecting your work from being eaten by ezBoard. We've all experienced this. And please, keep in mind that it's important to have an understanding of the 'rules' of writing before breaking them in the name of creativity.
Character:
Halen wrote that he wanted people to fully buy into the title of our board before joiningto write about the passion of existence. I still follow that that's a key aspect of SoP. Who is your character? What are they passionate about, what joys, sorrows, fierceness, hates and loves drive them? But even if your character is a stone, unfeeling killer with little in way of 'personality'. You should be passionate about writing his/her part in our tale. Mold your characters with flaws as well as greatness, give them character. Whether simple or complex. Make us enjoy discovering what drives them. We'll thank you for it and probably beg for more.
When you are ready to create a character, please look at the 'Application Form' to see how to proceed.
Force Ranking:
This concept is a big deal on most Star Wars RPG boards. What rank is my character!?! Gah! On Forse Extreem Leet I'm a Sith Master Sorcerer with the power to blow up a planet with my mind And smoosh a fleet of Republic dogs! Can I transfer Zomg Wicked Pwner of Doom's rank to SoP? (Thanks, Kam.)
Um...
Seriously, ranking in the Force is far less important at SoP than on other boards. If you prove to us that you're capable of writing a rank well and responsibly and in the spirit of SoP, you can begin with any rank you desire. Transfers of character/rank are handled the same way as completely fresh characters. It's all about the writing and the ability to work with each other.
On the other hand, if you'd prefer to start as an apprentice and be trained up through knighthood, by all means do! We will do our best to set you up with a PC master and begin the tale of your training, unless you prefer to write it yourself with an NPC master.
That said, here's a glance at our ranking system/titles:
The Sith Enclave
Disciple (apprentice)
Lord/Lordess/Mistress (Darth)
Master (Darth)
Dark Lord of the Sith (Darth) title only holdable by one person at a time
The Jedi Order
Padawan (apprentice)
Knight
Master
Of course, you don't have to be a part of the Jedi or Sith to wield the Force. There are cults, rogues, drifters and the like, but these are the primary categories, loosely separating good from evil. Bear in mind also that neutral (non-Force using) characters have a large role in our galaxy. It's not all about the Force. It's about the passion. Neutrals are warmly welcomed and no less important.
Thank you again for reading! We hope you dig your experience on SoP!
